Letter from Mrs. Skahan 1-7-18

January 8, 2018

Dear SCHS Families,

Good afternoon and I hope the first couple of days of school went smoothly and everyone is getting back into the routine.  We have a solid week of school with a jean day on Friday.  Students who want to dress out of uniform,in jeans and sweatshirts, may for $3.00.  All proceeds will go towards the Junior/Senior Prom in May.

I do assume that Seminole is still closed to through traffic.  Please, to access SCHS you will have to use Eastgate by Sam's Club and then turn right on to our school entrance road.  There will be signs and barricades at Blackman Road indicating this closure.  For student safety and the safety of our staff and visitors, please do not use the exit road to enter the high school.  The construction company hopes to have Seminole open soon.  Thank you for your attention and cooperation.

Our kleenex supply is very low again.  If you would be so kind as to send in a box or two of tissues for the chilly winter months, we would appreciate it.  Students may drop them off outside the academic office or in the school office.

"There will be a parent/student meeting Thursday 1/11/18 in the auditorium at 6:30 pm for anyone attending the Steubenville Youth Conference with Holy Trinity Parish. The group will be attending Steubenville July 13-15, 2018 at MSU. The last day to reserve your spot for the conference will be 1/30/18." Steubenville STL Mid-America is a high-energy youth conference where thousands of teens are invited to encounter Jesus Christ through dynamic speakers, engaging music, the Sacraments, small group discussions, and fellowship with other teens. Our conference is an outreach of Franciscan University in partnership with the St. Louis Archdiocesan Office of Youth Ministry.

Report cards were emailed out to you last week.  Please take time to discuss grades with your student.  It is important for students to set goals at the beginning of each quarter.  Attendance, punctuality and turning in daily assignments affects grades tremendously.

Remind your student that they begin all over again each semester and have a clean slate as far as demerits.  All students have two final exam opt out each semester.  Remind students of their community service requirement.  Winter month are always a good time to get community service projects accomplished.  The end of the year is so hectic and putting this requirement off just adds to that craziness later.  Theology teachers and on our website are many opportunities.

Wednesday evening of this week is our “Discovery Night”  for all new and incoming 8th graders to visit our school.  This event begins at 6:30 PM.  If you know of friends or relatives who may be interested in attending SCHS, please invite them to attend.

Thursday, January 11th is the monthly Springfield Catholic Schools Board Meeting at 7:00 PM.  Parents and friends are always invited to attend.

Please keep our teachers & students who will be traveling to Chicago on January 13th for March for Life in your prayers.   Continue to pray for Anna Smith who is getting stronger every day.  Hopefully her next treatment will begin soon.  Anna’s Army t-shirts are for sale again.  Anilita Coulter is at home and can use prayers as she recuperates after a long stay in the hospital.

The teachers, staff and I are excited about another semester.  Please refer to the school calendar often and read the weekly parent letter.

If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.   Wishing you all many blessings in the new year!
